PRONOUNCING BIBLE NAMES

One thing that hinders many people from volunteering to read the Bible out loud is uncertainty over how to pronounce the names of people and places in the various books. I used my linguistics training to make it easier.

Basic principles:

  1. If the name is a common English name (*e.g. David), the English pronunciation can be used.
  2. The consonants are usually easier. Usually they are close to English consonants.
  3. The vowels are usually NOT the same of the English vowels.

Note here that English is the outlier language.
    - Most languages have the sounds a="ah", e="ay", i="ee", o="oh", and u="oo".
    - English is different because it combines sounds from French and Anglo-Saxon.
    - Knowing Spanish makes it a lot easier, because Hebrew vowels are usually close to the Spanish vowels.

  4. Doubling vowels does not make a different sound. The same sound repeats.
  5. Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek have some different pronunciations.
  6. The Hebrew alphabet has no vowels. In modern Hebrew, vowel points are added to consonants.

In the following table, I display Hebrew letters before corresponding Greek letters because Greek letters are easier to recognize.

Some Hebrew letters have two forms. The final form is placed left of the normal form because Hebrew reads right-to-left.

"Out of order" means it is in the other alphabet in a different order.
